The Recreation Room Inside the Aquarium Live Wallpaper (version 1.5.3) is a new-tab video wallpaper extension from [email protected] with about 120 users. The scan produced exactly six findings, all medium-severity network entries: NET-FETCH-js/background.js-63, NET-FETCH-js/background.js-82, NET-FETCH-js/background.js-96, NET-FETCH-js/popup.js-39, NET-FETCH-js/sidePanel.js-362 and NET-FETCH-js/weather.js-49. That is the whole evidence set. There are no IoCs, no malware signatures, no obfuscation, no secrets, no dependency findings and no code-smell matches. The scan records no declared permissions and no host permissions.
Each of the six flags points at a fetch call. A live video wallpaper has to download video assets, and the files line up with visible features: js/background.js likely handles the tab lifecycle; js/popup.js and js/sidePanel.js render previews and settings; js/weather.js fetches forecast data. The fetch API is the standard browser mechanism for that work. The scan did not attach destination URLs to these entries, so the destinations are unknown from the evidence, but the IoC extractor found zero embedded domains, which means the parsed code contains no suspicious hardcoded hostnames.
The strongest counterargument is that six outbound calls from a 120-user extension with no declared permissions could be a quiet data collector, and the missing permission list might be a manifest parsing gap rather than an accurate picture. That concern is fair on its face. The reason it does not change the verdict is distribution: the fetch calls sit in the four files that render the wallpaper, preview and weather widget, not in a single background worker with cookie or tab access. A credential stealer or proxyware extension needs permissions to read cookies, tabs or proxy settings. None are declared here, and nothing in the file layout suggests covert collection. The extension name and description also match the feature set, with no typosquatting or impersonation of a known brand.
What would change this assessment is a destination URL list showing contact with unknown third-party servers, or a manifest that actually requests cookie, tab or webRequest access. Neither is present. On the current evidence, the scanner is flagging the normal use of fetch in an extension that streams video and pulls a weather forecast. That is a false-positive pattern, not misbehavior.
Key Reasons
- Only findings are six NET-FETCH entries in background.js, popup.js, sidePanel.js and weather.js, all consistent with loading video wallpaper assets and weather data
- Zero malware signatures, zero obfuscation, zero IoCs and zero code-smell matches
- No declared permissions or host permissions, so no access to cookies, tabs or credentials is requested
- Name and description match visible behavior, with no impersonation of a known extension
- Fetch calls are distributed across feature files rather than concentrated in a background data collector
False Positive Considerations
- Generic fetch() API usage flagged as network findings
- No IoC domains extracted, indicating no embedded suspicious hostnames
- Live wallpaper and weather features legitimately require remote asset loading
- No permission strings that would enable data collection
