Is BMW M4 City Ride Live Wallpaper safe?

The BMW M4 City Ride Live Wallpaper replaces your new tab page with rotating night-city shots of the car and adds a weather readout. Its manifest asks for no special permissions and no host permissions, so it does not get access to your browsing history, your tabs, your cookies or the pages you visit. That is a narrow footprint for a new tab extension.

The scan flagged six places where the code makes network requests: NET-FETCH-js/background.js-63, NET-FETCH-js/weather.js-49, NET-FETCH-js/popup.js-39 and three more in the same files. If those calls were shipping your browsing data somewhere, that would matter. Here they line up with the jobs the extension advertises: pulling wallpaper images in the background worker and asking a weather service for the temperature shown on the new tab.

Nothing else turned up. No malware signatures matched, no hidden or obfuscated code was found, no embedded secrets, and no known-bad domains. The scanner fired on the fetch calls, which are ordinary for anything that loads images or live data.

The one thing we could not confirm is where those requests go, because the scan did not record the URLs. If you want certainty, open the extension's background page in developer tools and look at the network tab; you will see the image host and the weather API there.

Evidence context: threat category none; evidence quality moderate.

BMW M4 City Ride Live Wallpaper is a new tab replacement that rotates night-city footage of the car and shows a weather readout. The scanned manifest lists no permissions and no host permissions. Nothing there grants access to cookies, tabs, history, or page content.

What the scan did record is six network requests. Three sit in the background service worker at js/background.js:63, js/background.js:82 and js/background.js:96. The rest are at js/popup.js:39, js/sidePanel.js:362 and js/weather.js:49. Read together, those four files describe the extension's whole surface: a worker that loads wallpaper assets, a popup, an options side panel, and a weather widget. Requests from weather.js and sidePanel.js are what a weather widget and a settings screen look like. Requests from background.js are what image rotation looks like.

Every other check came back empty. No malware signatures matched, no obfuscated or packed code was found, no embedded credentials, no dependency or supply-chain findings, and no known-bad domains. There are no indicators pointing at login pages, no history API manipulation, and no custom search or new tab redirect template.

A skeptic would push back here. A new tab extension with no declared permissions that still fires remote requests from a background worker is the shape of a monetized new tab page: swap in images from a third-party feed, track impressions, quietly collect usage. That pattern is common enough in this category to take seriously. What separates the two cases is the destination of those requests, and the scan recorded no URLs. Nothing in the evidence names a host, so the reading that these calls reach an image feed and a weather API rests on the surrounding code (a file named js/weather.js, a side panel that renders settings), on the developer contact at gameograf.com, and on the absence of any hostile signal across six separate checks.

The counterweight is the empty column. Extensions that hijack search or harvest sessions leave traces: an injected content script, a modified search provider, a cookie reader, an obfuscated payload, a domain that exists only to receive data. None of those appear. The finding list is six fetch calls and nothing else.

One open point remains. Load the extension's service worker from chrome://extensions and watch the network panel for the hosts behind js/background.js:63 and js/weather.js:49. That settles whether the traffic goes to an image host and a weather service, which is what the code around those calls describes.

Key Reasons

  • Only findings are six medium-severity fetch calls in js/background.js, js/popup.js, js/sidePanel.js and js/weather.js, which match a wallpaper-plus-weather new tab feature set
  • No malware signatures, no obfuscation, no secrets, no dependency and no IoC findings
  • Manifest lists no permissions and no host permissions, so no cookie, tab, history or content-script access exists to abuse
  • No custom search engine, no new tab redirect template and no history API manipulation
  • Developer is identified by a contact address at gameograf.com rather than being anonymous

False Positive Considerations

  • Network fetch findings on code that legitimately loads images and weather data
  • Zero supporting malicious categories (malware, obfuscation, secrets, IoC) alongside the network hits
  • Absence of any permission grant makes data theft or hijacking structurally hard

Reviewed 2026-10-17; recommended action: suppress false positive; model confidence 72%.
