Is Christmas Santa Claus Reindeer Live Wallpaper safe?

This extension replaces your Chrome new tab page with a Christmas scene: Santa, reindeer, a bit of animation. It also bundles a small weather widget that runs alongside the artwork. It declares no permissions at all, not even host permissions, so it cannot read the pages you visit, your cookies or your browsing history. Fetching content from the network is the one thing it can do.

That fetching shows up in six places. Three calls sit in js/background.js, at lines 63, 82 and 96. The rest are js/popup.js:39, js/sidePanel.js:362 and js/weather.js:49. Weather has to come from somewhere, so a panel like this needs a weather service. If js/weather.js:49 turned out to send your location to a host that profiles people, that would matter. Nothing in the code points that way. And with no host permissions, the extension has no way to attach page content to a request in the first place.

The long list of domains is where the scanning went wrong. Entries like 0x.cz, aм.az and 8원.pr are not websites. They are fragments of minified JavaScript with Cyrillic, Korean and accented letters spliced into the middle, and the scanner treats any run of characters around a dot as a hostname. Minified code is full of them. The remaining findings are code-quality notes about things like weak random numbers, the kind that fire on almost every JavaScript file this size.

What is left is a new tab picture, a forecast, and no permissions to do anything else with either.

Evidence context: threat category none; evidence quality moderate.

Christmas Santa Claus Reindeer Live Wallpaper is a new-tab replacement from a developer listing the contact address [email protected]. It ships version 3.6 to the Chrome Web Store with 390 users. The manifest declares no permissions and no host permissions, so the extension has no API access to tabs, cookies, history or the content of the pages you visit. What it can do is fetch data, and the six network findings describe exactly that: NET-FETCH-js/background.js-63, NET-FETCH-js/background.js-82 and NET-FETCH-js/background.js-96 in js/background.js, NET-FETCH-js/popup.js-39, NET-FETCH-js/sidePanel.js-362, and NET-FETCH-js/weather.js-49.

Those calls line up with the advertised feature set. A live wallpaper needs to pull image assets, and a weather panel needs a forecast from a weather service. The question worth asking about any fetch finding is where the request goes and what it carries. The scan contains no secret findings and no credential-access findings, and with zero host permissions the extension cannot read page content to attach to a request in the first place.

The 273 IoC entries are what inflate the total. Look at what is actually on the list: 0x.cz, 0ĕ.nl, 1ǵ.om, aм.az, 8원.pr, 9oōv.pr. None of these are registered hosts. They are fragments of minified JavaScript that happen to contain a dot, and several carry Cyrillic, Korean or accented characters spliced into the middle of a TLD. A real endpoint list for a wallpaper extension would show a CDN or the developer's own API. This list shows an extractor reading property chains and string literals out of bundled code. The count reflects how much minified code shipped, and nothing about how many servers the extension contacts.

The 45 code-smell findings are low-severity quality rules. They fire on ordinary JavaScript: eval patterns, weak random number generation, dynamically built regular expressions. None of them sit next to a malware signature. Across the entire scan there are zero malware-signature findings, zero obfuscation findings and zero tool-poisoning findings. Obfuscation is the main signal for a concealed payload, and it is absent here.

The strongest argument against this reading: the scanner does not record the destination of the six fetch calls, so js/weather.js:49 could contact a host that logs an IP address alongside a user identifier. That is a genuine gap. It is also a gap shared by every extension that talks to any server, and each escalation path that would make it a problem (reading cookies, injecting into pages, scraping form data) requires permissions this extension never requests. An extension with no host permissions quietly harvesting browsing data would be a first.

What would resolve it is pulling the request URLs out of js/background.js around line 63 and js/weather.js around line 49. Until then, the evidence describes a wallpaper and a weather widget doing ordinary work, with the finding count driven by bundled strings and broad code-quality rules.

Key Reasons

  • No permissions and no host permissions declared, so the extension cannot read tabs, cookies, history or page content.
  • Six NET-FETCH findings in js/background.js, js/popup.js, js/sidePanel.js and js/weather.js match a new-tab wallpaper loading images plus a weather widget loading a forecast.
  • Endpoint list contains malformed fragments such as 0x.cz, aм.az, 8원.pr and 9oōv.pr with Cyrillic, Korean and accented characters, which are minified JavaScript artifacts rather than hosts.
  • Zero malware-signature, zero obfuscation, zero secret and zero tool-poisoning findings across 324 total findings.
  • Developer contact [email protected] is listed and the extension impersonates no known brand or publisher.

False Positive Considerations

  • IoC extractor produced 273 junk entries from minified JavaScript, including Cyrillic, Korean and accented-character fragments read as hostnames
  • 45 low-severity code-smell rules firing on ordinary JavaScript patterns
  • Bundled new-tab and widget code inflating finding volume without adding actual risk

Reviewed 2026-10-16; recommended action: suppress false positive; model confidence 82%.
