Publisher identity, store signals, distribution reach, and warning signals used for context. Treat this as supporting evidence, not a clean bill of health.

Firefox does not expose the same publisher verification data as IDE stores, so this score is deliberately conservative.

AI Security Review

Evidence context: threat category none; evidence quality moderate.

BriefFeed is a Firefox extension that puts short summaries beside posts and videos, keeps a local bookmark library, and offers AI Insights on request. Version 0.1.116 carries six findings, all rated medium: five network detections and one entry from manifest analysis. There are no malware signatures, no indicator-of-compromise hits, no obfuscation detections, no secret matches, and no dependency findings. That distribution matters more than the total.

The five network findings land in files whose names describe the product. lib/hosted-api-client.js:152 is a fetch call in the client that talks to the extension's hosted backend, which is how an AI summarizer gets text summarized. lib/template-site-hints.js:147 and the two calls in lib/template-site-prompt.js, at lines 132 and 149, sit in prompt-building code, the same feature seen from a different angle. content/youtube-main-world-bridge.js:418 is the interesting one: a bridge that runs in the page's main JavaScript world so the extension can read content the page has already loaded. Main-world injection is a real capability. It is also the standard technique for reading page state that content scripts cannot reach directly, and this file is scoped to YouTube by its name and placement.

Nothing in this bundle shows a destination. The network_endpoints list is empty and the fetch titles stop at file and line, so we cannot say which host receives the requests, whether that host is the vendor's own API, or how much page text is included. That is a gap in the scan, not proof of harm.

The empty permissions and host_permissions arrays are the strongest thing a skeptic can point at. An extension with content scripts on YouTube normally declares matching host access, so an empty array either reflects a manifest the scanner could not fully parse or a permissions model built on optional grants requested at runtime. Either way, the finding set holds no evidence of credential access, cookie reads, history rewriting, search hijacking, or background data shipping.

That is the counterargument worth taking seriously: a main-world bridge plus an unseen API client plus missing host permissions is the shape a quiet page-scraper would have. The shape is real, and it is why this review stops short of calling the extension harmless. What is missing is any of the evidence that would make it malicious. No exfiltration domain, no malware signature in the same file as the injection code, no obfuscation, no bundled code concealing the calls. Compare this with genuine hijacker output, and what is left is five calls in libraries named for the features the store listing advertises.

The manifest-analysis entry is a single medium finding with no accompanying file path, and it should be settled by reading the actual manifest.json rather than by inference. Until then, the sensible reading is a young extension (0.1.116, no user base) whose code matches its description, with the caveat that the scanner never captured a request destination.

Key Reasons

  • Zero malware signatures, IoCs, obfuscation, secrets, or dependency findings across the whole bundle
  • All five network findings are fetch calls in files named for the extension's stated features: lib/hosted-api-client.js, lib/template-site-hints.js, lib/template-site-prompt.js
  • content/youtube-main-world-bridge.js uses main-world injection to read page state, a real capability with no accompanying evidence of exfiltration
  • network_endpoints is empty, so the scan never captured a request destination or a suspicious host
  • Version 0.1.116 with no user base yet and a description that matches the observed code

False Positive Considerations

  • NET-FETCH rules flag every fetch() in extension code, which always fires on an API-backed AI feature
  • Suppressed IoC extractor and code-smell rules produced nothing here, so the six findings are the entire signal
  • manifest-analysis entry has no file path, consistent with a parsing gap rather than a manifest problem
  • Empty permissions and host_permissions arrays likely reflect incomplete manifest capture for a content-script extension

About This Extension

BriefFeed is a desktop Firefox reading assistant that helps you understand loaded content without losing the original source. It places compact AI summaries beside supported social posts, discussions, articles, project pages, podcast Show Notes, and available current-video transcript, subtitle, timeline, or chapter text. Save worthwhile sources to a local bookmark library, then create a source-linked AI Insights brief when you choose. BriefFeed summarizes only supported content already loaded in the browser. It does not auto-scroll or paginate feeds, read cookies or passwords, collect private messages, or call social-feed APIs to obtain more posts. Supported surfaces include X/Twitter, Bluesky, Jike, Weibo, Reddit, V2EX, Hacker News, Lobsters, GitHub, Product Hunt, YouTube, Bilibili, WeChat Official Accounts, Substack, Medium, WordPress, DEV Community, arXiv, OpenReview, Apple Podcasts, Xiaoyuzhou, and opened Xiaohongshu note details. Named supported sites use required access; supported custom article domains ask for exact-site access when you enable them. Optional Notion and NotebookLM exports are initiated or enabled by the user and go directly from Firefox to the chosen service. BriefFeed is free to use. An optional reading workspace brings together bookmarks, local browsing-history search, and source-linked Insights. It is off by default. Open it from the extension menu after enabling it in Settings. A separate, default-off Firefox option opens the bundled BriefFeed workspace automatically in native new tabs. Turn it off at any time; private tabs, blank pages, and other extensions’ new-tab pages remain unchanged.
